At the bottom of Lake Michigan a sleeping terror waits. Lying dormant for centuries, now it has come ashore…

In late 2009, something huge rose from the waters of Lake Michigan and attacked the City of Milwaukee, leaving a trail of traumatised folk in its wake. The government tried to cover it all up, but Firestarter Films, aided and abetted by Jon Richter of Supermassive Studios, collected footage shot by assorted residents and put it together so that we could get some idea of what happened.

Or so the story goes.

Richter explains:

Brookfield was created for a film event that happens every other month here in Milwaukee. For each event there is a theme. Last January the theme was a parody of monster attack movies like Cloverfield. Since I own a small VFX and production company (Supermassive Studios), I was asked to create the original version so that people had an idea of what to contribute. [This is the version you can see below.]. My short also became the trailer for the event. The footprint image [above] was the shadow matte used in 3D to make the footprint hole seen in the film.

One more interesting tidbit — the orange sculpture seen flying down the street in the beginning is a notorious piece of street art here in Milwaukee called “The Sunburst”. Many people dislike it and have petitioned for it to be removed several times. We thought it was funny to have our monster throw it down the street.

The Promo Teaser:

The Extended Footage:

Brookfield – Extended Trailer from Supermassive Studios on Vimeo.

The following promo was also created, adding its bit to the “mythos” of conspiracy underlying the concept. It is here that the monster is named — Lakeicane — for reasons that should become obvious.

In the finished film the monster is not seen. With the other contributions edited into it, what Brookfield represents is a collection of “footage” taken by people caught in the monster’s path.

The Compiled Film:

Wynorski says that the movie is now in post production. It stars Julie K. Smith, Rebecca Love, Amy Reid, Lucia Reyes and Brandin Rackley — among others. “The monster is quite amusing as well,” he added. “Look for it soon.”

And for those still drawn to the film because of the possibility that that’s Denise Milani on the Cleavagefield poster, he says “She’s NOT in it … sorry.”

Just to fill up the space, here’s a picture of Penthouse Pet of the Month (February 1993) Julie K. Smith in one of her more recent flicks, Baberellas (US-2003; dir. Chuck Cirino) — They’ll Do Anything To Save the Earth. Anything.

You had to ask, didn’t you?

This is an ad for a new giant monster film that’s just gone into production. No, really! It is! The film’s called Cleavagefield – for reasons no one could possibly guess, though I’m sure it will became clear when we see the movie… Here’s the plot, as described by director Jim Wynorski:

A bunch of hot chicks are having a slumber party for their friend Tiffany, who’s off to Sweden to make a high end Triple X movie. The festivities are in high gear; but then a giant monster inexplicably invades Los Angeles. One girl videos everything as the babes make a run for it through the city. But there are more things to beware of beside the monster. According to some naked hotties seen in an alley way, the monster is covered with moth-mites that drop off its slimy body then attack unwary female victims, chewing off their clothes. It’s a harrowing night for all involved.

Wynorski has fallen from the exploitation heights of Chopping Mall (1986), The Return of the Swamp Thing (1989) and The Haunting of Morella (1990) into a fertile career that combines B-grade monster flicks like The Curse of the Komodo (2004) with soft-porn film parodies like The Bare Wench Project (2000) and The Bare Wench Project 2: Scared Topless (2001) — all of them very low budget.

As you can tell, though, Cleavagefield is a serious drama….

Via

PS. I wonder what the monster will look like?

Talk about giant monster nerds! Cloverfield producer J.J. Abrams and/or director Matt Reeves are certainly in the terminal stages of Kaiju Obsessiveness. The DVD release of their US giant monster hit has revealed that the film is riddled with subliminal images of famous American giant monsters of the past. Look vewy vewy closely and you’ll see King Kong, the Rhedosaur from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and one of the giant ants from Them! — at least these. There are probably others as yet unrevealed.

It’s almost as though Rob’s digital camera (which was supposedly filming the events as they happened) had at one time had in its memory clips from the various old films, and some of them weren’t quite recorded over — just as the earlier shots of Rob and Beth managed to survive into the scenes of monster rampage.

Unlike those scenes, however, we’re talking single frames here, so it’s only by the use of DVD pause functions that you’ll see them clearly — though many claim to have noticed them in the theatrical print… and the credit sequences at the end did include the relevant acknowledgements as a nice clue to the more perceptive (or more obsessive) in the audience.

If you want to know about the abundant esoteria packed into Cloverfield this is a great place to look.

More of the hidden monsters can be found here.

The Cloverfield “shadow” website (which consists of movable snapshots) has been updated with some interesting pictures that might provide an answer. Here’s three that caught my attention:

The monster’s left-overs?

The Navy attacks!

And suffers the consequences…

With Abrams and crew you never know what the clues might lead to — and it’s quite likely that these pictures simply represent some nifty “extras” for the DVD. But then again…
