This ongoing, ever-growing list of giant monster films is divided into several parts. The main division is between the Western or Hollywood tradition and the Japanese tradition (daikaiju eiga<\/em>), which, though it developed from the Western tradition, became so distinctive that there is value in keeping it separate. On occasion, the definition of what constitutes a “giant monster” may be seen to have become fairly loose. For reference purposes I have included films that feature prehistoric animals — the larger ones, at any rate. I have also included a number of “mechanised” monster flicks, as there are at least a few giant alien robot and “mecha” films that use the tropes of daikaiju eiga<\/em> and have all the combative, city-crunching enthusiasm of their flesh-and-blood counterparts. Some of the films included are definitely stretching the definition, but I have my own devious interest in having them there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
