{"id":13052,"date":"2013-02-25T18:47:44","date_gmt":"2013-02-25T07:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/?p=13052"},"modified":"2013-03-01T08:37:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T21:37:21","slug":"jellyfish-eyes-the-new-yokai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/index.php\/2013\/02\/25\/jellyfish-eyes-the-new-yokai\/","title":{"rendered":"Jellyfish Eyes: The New Y\u00f4kai?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Images of the cute yet bizarre <em>kaiju<\/em> (that is, monsters) inhabiting Takashi Murakami&#8217;s much-anticipated fantasy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/index.php\/2012\/08\/12\/the-art-of-monsters-takashi-murakami-and-jellyfish-eyes\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mememe no Kurage<\/em> (<em>Jellyfish Eyes<\/em>)<\/a> reveal an imagination that has taken its own established aesthetic and created a weird, toy-like pantheon of creatures very reminiscent, in their own way, of the famed <em>y<em>\u00f4<\/em>kai<\/em> of Japanese folklore &#8212; <em>y<em>\u00f4<\/em>kai<\/em> being ghosts, phantoms and strange apparitions, made famous in cinema by the film trilogy <em>Y<em><em>\u00f4<\/em><\/em>kai daisenso<\/em> [aka Big Ghost War; Spook Warfare] (Japan-1968, dir. Yoshiyuki Kuroda), <em>Y<em><em>\u00f4<\/em><\/em>kai Hyaku Monogatari<\/em> [aka The Hundred Monsters] (Japan-1968, dir. Kimiyoshi Yasuda) and <em>T\u00f4kaid\u00f4 obake d\u00f4ch\u00fb<\/em> [aka Along With Ghosts] (Japan-1969; dir. Kimiyoshi Yasuda), as well as in the more recent &#8220;remake&#8221; <em>The Great Yokai War<\/em> [aka Y<em><em><em>\u00f4<\/em><\/em><\/em>kai daisenso] (Japan-2005; dir. Takashi Miike).
