They&#8217;re too small. But the interesting thing about ants &#8212; particularly the ones that gather into vast hordes, like the South American Army Ant &#8212; is that what they individually lack in size they make up for in collective rapaciousness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"460\" height=\"305\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/DXaaTQztoI0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/DXaaTQztoI0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>So in a way, ant hordes &#8212; acting via a sort of <em>gestalt<\/em> consciousness &#8212; may indeed be thought of a giant monster.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for example, the classic 1938 short story by Carl Stephenson, &#8220;Leiningen versus the Ants&#8221; (which you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicshorts.com\/stories\/lvta.html\" target=\"_blank\">read online<\/a>, if you&#8217;re not familiar with it) and its cinematic incarnation <em>The Naked Jungle<\/em> (US-1954; dir. Byron Haskin), which starred Charlton Heston as the man who takes up arms against the composite monster seeking to devour everything in its path.<\/p>\n<p>Just completed and looking for a home in a few good festivals is a new film about hordes of ants &#8212; <em><strong>Invicta<\/strong><\/em> (US-2009; dir. Carolyn Banks).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/invicta-redlogo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3587 aligncenter\" title=\"invicta-redlogo\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/invicta-redlogo.jpg\" alt=\"invicta-redlogo\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The title <em>Invicta<\/em> refers to the scientific name of the relevant species &#8212; The Red Imported Fire Ant (<em>Solenopsis invicta<\/em>). <em>Invicta<\/em> is one of over 280 species of <em>Solenopsis<\/em>, or Fire Ant &#8212; a particularly pesky import that originated in South America but has become a nuisance in places as diverse as in the southern United States, Australia, Taiwan, Philippines, and the southern Chinese province of Guangdong and has hence become the target of largely ineffectual eradication campaigns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kays-face2invicta.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3593\" title=\"kays-face2invicta\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kays-face2invicta.jpg\" alt=\"kays-face2invicta\" width=\"460\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kays-face2invicta.jpg 632w, https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kays-face2invicta-300x104.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invictamovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">official website<\/a>, the film is a blend of comedy, romance and horror, a genre that writer-director Carolyn Banks calls \u201cHorror Tra-La.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the tagline describes it: &#8220;Love, greed and fire ants mix it up in rural Texas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/jessicainvicta.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3592 aligncenter\" title=\"jessicainvicta\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/jessicainvicta.jpg\" alt=\"jessicainvicta\" width=\"269\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Filmed almost entirely in Bastrop, Texas, the rough cut of <em>Invicta<\/em> &#8220;looks\u00a0 fabulous,&#8221; according to Banks, who added, &#8220;and since it was our first movie, I was\u00a0 prepared for the worst.&#8221; Banks has published novels and written and directed several shorts, but reckons:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230; a feature is a whole other animal. It involves juggling people and props and keeping everyone fed\u00a0 and in the right clothes and at the right place at the right time.&#8221;\u00a0Also, she says, &#8220;moviemaking always comes across as so glamorous, but it&#8217;s hard, hard work both while you&#8217;re shooting it and afterward. Staggs, known in Hollywood as an animator on 2006&#8217;s <em>A Scanner Darkly<\/em> and in other SFX capacities.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully we&#8217;ll hear more of this film soon.
