Yoshiyuki Kuroda)<strong>; Yokai Hyaku Monogatari<\/strong> [aka The Hundred Monsters] (Japan-<span class=\"currency_converter_link\" title=\"Convert this amount\"><span class=\"currency_converter_link\" title=\"Convert this amount\">1968<\/span><\/span>, dir. Kimiyoshi Yasuda) and <strong>T\u00f4kaid\u00f4 obake d\u00f4ch\u00fb<\/strong> [aka Along with Ghosts] (Japan-1969; dir. Yoshiyuki Kuroda and Kimiyoshi Yasuda) &#8212; and the recent big-budget remake <strong>Yokai daisenso<\/strong> (2005; dir. Takashi Miike) [aka The Great Yokai War].<\/p>\n<p><em>Y\u014dkai<\/em> are weird and, in folklore, omnipresent, having a wide range of bizarre and hybrid forms. They can be friendly, mischievous, spooky or outright nasty. Check out Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt&#8217;s book <em>Yokai Attack: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide <\/em>(Kodansha International) and you&#8217;ll see what I mean. Or go <a href=\"http:\/\/east-asian-history.net\/textbooks\/172\/ch8.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for a more academic treatment. According to Komatsu Kazuhiko, a scholar of <em>y\u014dkai<\/em>, the term means &#8220;an abnormal phenomenon, or a related thing or entity.&#8221; Think hobgoblins, ogres, gremlins and the like&#8230; but much weirder in a typically Japanese fashion.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most well-known of the <em>Y\u014dkai<\/em> is the Kappa, pictured here from the Yoda and Alt&#8217;s book:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kappa.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3608 aligncenter\" title=\"kappa\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kappa.jpg\" alt=\"kappa\" width=\"459\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kappa.jpg 509w, https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/kappa-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Kappa is a sort of river sprite. To quote the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kappa_(folklore)\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia entry<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Kappa<\/em> are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women&#8217;s kimonos, to the more troublesome, such as stealing crops or kidnapping children. In fact, small children are one of the gluttonous <em>kappa&#8217;<\/em>s favorite meals, though they will eat adults as well. Even today, signs warning about <em>kappa<\/em> appear by bodies of water in some Japanese towns and villages. <em>Kappa<\/em> are also said to be afraid of fire, and some villages hold fireworks festivals each year to scare the spirits away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(See <strong>Gallery<\/strong> below for lots of images of Kappa, traditional and otherwise &#8212; courtesy of Kaiju Search-Engine Avery)<\/p>\n<p>Tomoo Haraguchi &#8212; who worked on SFX for such films as <em>Uzumaki<\/em> (2000) and two of the 1990s Gamera trilogy by Shusuke Kaneko, <em>Gamera: Guardian of the Universe<\/em> and <em>Gamera 2: Advent of Legion<\/em>, and directed the traditional monster epic <em>Sakuya: Slayer of Demons<\/em> (2000) as well as the more recent <em>Werewolf Warrior<\/em> (2004) &#8212; has announced the production of a new <em>daikaiju eiga<\/em>, <em>Death Kappa<\/em>, where the main giant monster is an oversized Kappa. Coming as it is from production company Fever Dreams, who were behind the analog gore of <em>The Machine Girl<\/em> and <em>Tokyo Gore Police<\/em>, the prospects for <em>Death Kappa<\/em> are looking
