Currently the  precise usage of &#8220;Cholo&#8221; has varied widely in different times and places&#8230; &#8220;Cholo&#8221; as an English-language term dates at least to 1851 when it  was used by Herman Melville in <em>Moby Dick<\/em> referring to a Spanish-speaking  sailor&#8230; (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cholo\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Chola&#8221; is the female version, particularly in the modern US urban environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7522 aligncenter\" title=\"MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez.jpg\" alt=\"MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez\" width=\"371\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez.jpg 600w, https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MoniqueCalderon-RaychelEspiritu-JanetLopez-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">Monique Calderon, Raychel Espiritu and Janet Lopez strut some chola stuff<br \/>\non the set of a new Latina monster film<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the many definitional variations appearing on the online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Dictionary<\/a><em> <\/em>a <em>Chola <\/em>is referred to as: &#8220;a mexican gangsta girl&#8221;, or, at greater length:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Chicana\/Mexican America\/Latina who is the female  counter part to the  Cholo in the barrio [the &#8220;hood&#8221;, the Latino ethnic neighbourhood] .  She claims her space in the  neighborhood, city,  and community she is from.  Doesn&#8217;t have  to have been &#8220;jumped  in&#8221; to a gang to play a role as a chola.  It  really is a barrio  mentality and pride in culture that makes her a  chola.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Taking the lead from the 1958 B-classic <em>Attack of the 50 Foot Woman<\/em> (dir. Nathan  Juran), this new film re-works the &#8220;revenge of the woman scorned&#8221; motif for the chola\/cholo sub-culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chola-poster.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7516 aligncenter\" title=\"chola-poster\" src=\"http:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chola-poster.jpg\" alt=\"chola-poster\" width=\"476\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chola-poster.jpg 600w, https:\/\/roberthood.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/chola-poster-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attack of the 30 Foot Chola<\/strong> (US-2010; dir. I also have an old 80s comic attached to the film&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On its origins he commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My father was a Mexican folkloric dancer, who exposed me to the Chola  culture of East LA in the 1980s, and that experience stayed with me over  the years. As a filmmaker looking to create characters that are larger  than life and contain a storyline with a universal theme,  those  memories heavily influenced the making of this film.
