Giant Monster Movie List

This ongoing, ever-growing list of giant monster films is divided into several parts. The main division is between the Western or Hollywood tradition and the Japanese tradition (daikaiju eiga), which, though it developed from the Western tradition, became so distinctive that there is value in keeping it separate. On occasion, the definition of what constitutes a “giant monster” may be seen to have become fairly loose. For reference purposes I have included films that feature prehistoric animals — the larger ones, at any rate. I have also included a number of “mechanised” monster flicks, as there are at least a few giant alien robot and “mecha” films that use the tropes of daikaiju eiga and have all the combative, city-crunching enthusiasm of their flesh-and-blood counterparts. Some of the films included are definitely stretching the definition, but I have my own devious interest in having them there.

Relatively Giant Monster Films

These films feature creatures (mainly insects but also sharks, crocodiles and the like — and even the odd humanoid) that are giant-size relative to their species’ normal dimensions, but which are not actually gargantuan in the truest sense. In particular, it includes giant insects where the bugs are much larger than reality though smaller than, say, Mothra.

  4. Tim says:

Are you serious? They’re going to make Joe Devito’s Kong: King of Skull Island into a movie! I loved that book! What all is known about the project?

  5. Backbrain says:

Tim, all the information I have dates from a year ago — and nothing seems to have changed. You can read what is known here:

  6. i love the old b grade movies from the 1950’s. The scarry old black and white movies with giant insects etc but, i supose they are a thing of the past.

  7. Please add the movie named THE PRINCE, THE WITCH AND THE MERMAID to your big monsters list. It is directed by Chalart Sriwanda. The witch is a big monster—a sea witch.

I am from Pendleton Oregon USA. I found this movie for a dollar at Walmart and I love it. I have watched it about 5 times. I love mermaids.

I found your site looking up Chalart Sriwanda to see what country the movie was from possibly. If it is correct, the movie is from Thailand. This is not important, but I have temple goddess dancer jewelry from Siam, which is now Thailand. I have bookmarked your site. It is informative. Thank you for listening and please add this movie to the big monsters list.

    Sincerely,
    Candy

  8. Avery says:

Hey Candace, thanks for visiting and adding us. We’re glad that you like the site. The film you’re talking about is already here under it’s Thai title :

Phra Apai Mani (Thailand-2002; dir. Chalart Sriwanda)

We’ll add the English titling as well. Thanks again!

  9. Carter says:

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort of putting together such a complete list of monster movies. It gives the one place to find the titles for giant movies to add to my collection. They make a great addition to my Godzilla room. Thank you again very much.

  10. Nate says:

You have done a good job with this list. I was wondering if you have actually seen all these flix??

  11. Robert Hood says:

Nate, I’ve seen a lot of them. Some haven’t been available anywhere, and some I’m not willing to spend any money to see. Of the rest, well, I’m … working on it. 🙂

  14. What is this “The Mothra” business? I can’t find anything about it anywhere and you aren’t citing your source.

Who told you there was gonna be a new Mothra flick?

  15. Robert Hood says:

cultistofvertigo, there was a film called “The Mothra” that appeared on Wikipedia some years ago as a future project. I was, of course, doubtful — hence the “status uncertain”. I was trying to keep track of rumours, too, at the time. The reference appears to have gone now, so I suppose I should remove it from my list. [It’s gone!] The comment gave no indication whether or not it was supposed to be a Toho film or what — but I reckon it was an “or what”.

Has anyone out there in monster community read this new THE ICE GORILLA book yet? I have read the reviews but have not picked up a copy yet. Also noticed that movie producers have stated they are trying to turn THE ICE GORILLA into a movie. Does anyone know if this is true?.?/? Thanks

  20. Damon Foster says:

Regarding Lee’s “rock fighter” movie question. You sure it’s “old”? Are you sure it’s Japanese? If not, the description sounds a lot like Steve Wang’s KUNG FU RASCALS (a low budget movie, filmed in L.A.). It’s from the late 1980s or maybe early 1990s.

  21. Robert Hood says:

It’s in the list above: Kung Fu Rascals (US-1992; dir. Steve Wang). I did have a VHS copy once and that must be around the house somewhere. Have forgotten it though. The trouble is, I haven’t even got a working VHS player these days!!!

  23. Jordu Schell says:

It seems rather incredible, but it appears that you forgot ‘Jurassic Park’! I could not find it in the 1993 section of your American list of films. The sequels are there, but not the first which is, of course, the most famous. Is there a reason for it’s non-inclusion (i.e. on a separate list), or was it simply overlooked—perhaps because it’s SO ridiculously obvious? Either way, a wonderfully exhaustive list of monster flix!

  24. Matt says:

There is also Tsu Hong Wu, a Chinese fantasy film (1971 I think, but there is sketchy details on it) with a giant ogre and dragon. The footage, along with new footage, was also used in Sea God and Ghosts and The Fairy and the Devil, also Chinese films from the 70s.

Great site…I loved strolling down memory lane from when I was a child watching these movies on Saturday afternoon. I was wondering about a movie that was Japanese and had giant squid in the clouds and also had jewel thieves in it, in the end they used wasp venom to defeat the monsters, does anyone remember the title ?

  27. Robert Hood says:

Hi, Godzilla fan forever! The film is Uchu daikaiju Dogora [Space Giant Monster Dogora] (1964; dir. Ishiro Honda) [aka Dagora, the Space Monster (US, 1965)]. Here’s my review: http://roberthood.net/reviews/randomstuff2.html#dogora

  28. Christina Li Volsi says:

I am trying to discover the title of a movie that I saw on TV with my dad in the 1980s. It features a town with underground tunnels that connect to each house and lead to a cavern with a lake. The characters get attacked by smooth, white or milky white creatures with at least one tentacle each. The creatures live in the underground lake, but they use the tunnels to get humans. Although I was in middle school at the time that I saw the movie, I remember that a tentacle coming up through a grate in the floor of a cabin or house. The place may have been rented by the young adults for a vacation. Obviously, the characters have to investigate, find a opening to a tunnel in the cellar/basement, and follow the tunnel to the cavern and lake. B or worse movie rating…no doubt.

  29. Riccardo Brains says:

Missing: John Waters’ “Multiple Maniacs” (1970) for the appearance of human-sized lobster Lobstora towards the end of the film.

Trying to figure out the name of a movie I saw as a kid…. there were two giant apes?( Maybe) that were different colors. One was good and one was bad – just remember one ate people and spit out their clothes. Ring any bells?

  32. Robert Hood says:

Terri, you’re thinking of the Japanese film “Furankenshutain no kaiju-Sanda tai Gaira” [trans. Frankenstein Monsters – Sanda vs Gaira] (1966; dir. Ishiro Honda), better known in US translation as “War of the Gargantuas” (1970). Two mutant “brothers”, the first of which was spawned from the irradiated heart of the Frankenstein monster in “Frankenstein Conquers the World” (1965/1966). Both were directed by “Gojira” [Godzilla, King of the Monsters] creator Ishiro Honda.

  33. Roger Priddy says:

Love your website. I am a huge fan of “Giant Monster Movies” and have been searching for a list as gargantuan as your wonderful Giant Monster Movie List. I think I may have three films to add…

    1. Eragon: 2006 (with the ever growing dragon Saphira)
    2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon: 2011 (you have the first Transformers Movies and I too would consider these “Giant Monster Movies”)
    3. Transformers: Age of Extinction: 2014 (gotta be on here with the dinobots).

Again–wonderful list–please keep up the excellent work!!! – Roger Priddy

  34. Robert Hood says:

Oh, thanks, Roger. It gets tough keeping these lists up to date. Have you checked out the zombie one? That’s a killer. Ghost list is full on, too. I’m sure I’ve missed candidates there.

You’re right in regards to your additions. I think “Eragon” annoyed me so much, I forgot about it. But there’s a LOT worse on the list already, so it deserves a place. And I just saw “Transformers: Age of Extinction” last weekend. Definitely giant monster stuff!

  35. Roger Priddy says:

Robert–excellent–thanks for your quick response. Again, wonderful website and lists. I’ve got a place to go to now to find all the many Giant Monster Movies that I have not seen!

  36. Robert Hood says:

If that’s your plan, Roger, you’ll need lots of free time! Good luck! 🙂

  37. Roger Priddy says:

    I wish Robert–how I wish.

    2 more…
    The Killer Shrews (1959)
    Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969 short)

    • Robert Hood says:

Hmmm. I guess “Bambi Meets Godzilla” is valid (even if it’s little more than a joke, I did see it in a cinema once), but “The Killer Shrews”? Nothing giant-size there as far as I recall, though I may not have seen it right to the end. The shrews aren’t any bigger than, oh, say … dachshunds. Okay, admittedly that’s big for a shrew, but do they really deserve to be on a giant monster list? Yes? Oh, alright, I’ll put it in the “Relative” list.

  38. Roger Priddy says:

    Agreed Robert.

I remember having a VHS Tape of Godzilla 1985 and before the movie it had that cute bit of animation on it. And bambi thought man was tough to deal with?

And the shrews…probably indeed not gargantuan but hopefully worthy of the relatively list.

  41. Roger Priddy says:

Hi Robert. Hope that you are well. SHARKTOPUS VS. PTERACUDA not worthy of the list?

Love the Giant Monster Movie posters here too. Make an awesome page just a little more awesome.

    Cheers

    • Robert Hood says:

Thanks, Roger. SHARKTOPUS VS. PTERACUDA probably isn’t “worthy”, but it should be there nevertheless. 🙂 Consider the omission rectified. I started adding the posters on a whim, but ran out of time over the weekend. So, more to come….

  42. Roger Priddy says:

    Two more to check…
    Triassic Attack (2010)
    Age of Dinosaurs (2013)

  43. Robert Hood says:

Thanks, Roger. Slow response, but done. I’m starting to think a separate Dinosaur list might be called for.

  44. Matthew says:

    You forgot some.
    THE LOST WHIRL (1926) Dinosaurs
SINBAD, ALI BABA AND ALADDIN (1965) Monsters by Eiji Tsuburaya
PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT (1977) Dinosaurs and other prehistoric monsters
WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS (1978) Giant octopus and other giant monsters
THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE (2002) Animated feature with a giant Mojo Jojo at the end that spoofs King Kong ( here he is called Mo Mojo).
SCOOBY-DOO (2002) Live-action adaptation of the cartoon where in the climax, Scrappy-Doo turns into a giant monster called Scrappy-Rex.

    • Robert Hood says:

Thanks for all this, Matthew. I’m added the films you brought to my attention. I haven’t seen any of them, though Warlords of Atlantis [aka Warlords of the Deep] sounds interesting. Sorry about the late response. I seem to have missed seeing your messages. I’ve been distracted by life issues, work and writing deadlines, not to forget the fact that the whole site got attacked and it’s taken a while to get back as much of it as I can. Do you have a source for the monsters having been done by Eiji Tsuburaya in SINBAD, ALI BABA AND ALADDIN (1965)? IMDb disagrees though the entry is very token.

  45. Matthew says:

You also forgot, FLESH GORDON AND THE COSMIC CHEERLEADERS (1989) Giant ape named King Dong, monster with a dick on his head and a spider-like monster.
