Zombie Movie List

This is a continually developing list of zombie films; that is, films and telemovies (and at times episodes of TV shows) that feature walking (and sometimes running) corpses, whether in the post-Romero mode, in the earlier voodoo-style tradition, or simply in respect to a very physical (and usually decayed) return from death. For assorted caveats, see the end of this page.

Comment on the film entries:

Some entries are not strictly speaking zombie films at all as, for example, the “zombies” in them may not be dead but simply will-less, controlled by an evil (or alien) master or virally mad (e.g. 28 Days Later...). In these “nearly dead” cases I have included the film for its thematic or tropic connection to the sub-genre. But I have generally excluded the classic “Mummy” movies — these will be the subject of another list, though (as with ghosts) there are inevitable crossovers (some ghosts are extremely visceral). You won’t find vampire movies here either, unless they include the more classically corpse-like undead as well as the literate, bloodsucking kind (and there are always the “hopping vampires” of Asian films). Finally, the other “back-from-the-dead” films I haven’t included are films based on Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein — again, with exceptions.

Titles, alternative titles, directors and dates are as accurate and complete as I can logistically manage, but different sources often vary in detail. Where there is disagreement, and the film was unavailable for viewing, I have generally followed Phil Hardy from his Aurum Film Encyclopedia of Horror or, failing that, information on the Internet Movie Database. Generally the date given is the date of first release rather than initial production, though I sometimes go by copyright, which, more often than not, is the production date. Often I haven’t included all title variants; in some instances there are just too many, so I have stuck to the most common. Also I have only included short zombie films that have signifacnt profile or which I have been able to view. Fortunately, many of these are appearing online these days. Some films with “zombie” in the title turn out not to be zombie films at all. I may have inadvertently included some of these, and hopefully over time they will be weeded out as I can view them. By the same token if your favourite obscure zombie flick isn’t here, let me know and I’ll put it in.

Thanks, Dave. I try to keep it complete as I can — a difficult task when there are so many, big and small. So don’t forget to let me know if you come across any zombie films that I haven’t listed.

I’ve added it, Robert. As the YouTube comment says, the story is “as thin as fresh ice”, but it looks and sounds excellent. It’s like the opening scene of a feature.

  17. Ray says:

Can anyone help me identify the name of a movie? I believe this was only out a couple years ago at most and I th0ught it was a zombie movie, 28 Weeks Later in fact. But after just watching it I realized that was not the movie.

The one I am thinking of was marketed with the following scene (I think this takes place in Britain but I’m not sure): There is an armed camp of survivors with a wall around it that is fairly lawless, and a woman in a fast car breaks into the camp by jumping over a barrier. Apparently being inside the camp is as dangerous as being outside it with the zombies. But she has to break in to get a sample of something, maybe a vaccine.

I remember this was a Milla Jovovich type, but I can’t find any of the Resident Evil movies that have a plot like this.

The movie was marketed kind of like a cross between Mad Max, Resident Evil and Escape from New York, and I distinctly remember it had a foreign flavor to it like it was from England, and it was all about fast cars, explosions, guns etc and fighting more than actual zombies.

Anyone have any clue what I’m talking about? Its driving me crazy. I never saw the film but I know the scene was pretty compelling and it was out maybe just a year or two ago.

Thanks for any hints as to what this might be!

  18. Jon says:

    Ray-

Sounds like you might be thinking of “Doomsday”, with Rhona Mitra & Bob Hoskins.
It is one of those movies that can slip between the cracks because it isn’t really a
zombie movie. Much more Escape From New York than Resident Evil or 28 Days Later, but a good mindless-fun popcorn movie.

IM LOOKING FOR A MOVIE I SAW BACK IN 1985, movie was older i guess, the movie starts when a phone call in the middle of the night wakes a man who works at the airport, an airplane has landed without permission and zombies come out of it, anybody knows what is the name of the movie?? help please…thanks

  22. Robert Hood says:

Joey, the one you’re looking for is NIGHTMARE CITY [aka Incubo sulla Citta Contaminata; La Invasión de los zombies atomicos; City of the Walking Dead; Invasion of the Atomic Zombies] (Italy/Spain-1980; dir. Umberto Lenzi). From memory, these zombies were fast-moving in the “modern” fashion and I think at one stage they’re using guns….

  23. Joey says:

thanks for your answer, but the movie i talk about it seems like an american production, much more real than that, the zombies came out of the airplane at night in the mist, and the couple (main actors) are killed in a park over a rollercoaster, then it happens that everything was a dream, and then the phone rings waking the man again, and the story it seems to repeat, when they say on the phone that one airplane landed without permission…..

  24. Anthony says:

To all Zombiephiles out there, can you help me????
As a child of 9 or 10 I remember seeing two distinct scenes from a zombie movie(s):
First Scene/Shot: a zombie in dark drab and long, matted, stringy hair is crawling on the floor inside a garage stalking some poor sap unawares to the creature’s presence. I remember the director distinctly showed the zombie crawler right next to a classic muscle car, it might have been painted red or orange. I will never forget how beautifully and hauntingly shot this scene was.
Second Scene/Shot: A man (resembling Rick Moranis from Ghostbusters or the actor in The Re-Animator) is driving his car, possibly trying to escape a zombie horde, when he stops near a fog-covered cemetary (i think, i thought i remember seeing wrought-iron gates). He has stopped because lo-and-behold the corpse of his dead girlfriend from the 1950s (she was definitely wearing either one of those “poodle” dresses and/or a turtleneck of the era) has resurrected. And I’ll never forget this: he gets out of the car and starts dancing with her and there is some kind of doo-wop, Little Richard, or Frankie Valle-type music track playing at the same time.
These images are burned into my collective memory for all time and I would love to know if these are scenes from one or two different films. Thank you for your time : )

    @ Robert Hood and Joey

I’ve been trying to find that movie where the couple dies on the rollercoaster tracks for ages! I saw it in pieces when I was a kid and I distinctly remember they’d climbed up onto the rollercoaster’s frame trying to escape zombies on the ground. I think the girl fell first and then he died somehow too and they woke up and it was a damned dream. Interestingly, this made future me more scared of rollercoasters than zombies…

The version I saw was dubbed over into Spanish from another language. So it’s at least definitely not a Spanish language film. The girl had shortish blonde hair? I think, I THINK that I remember seeing ‘ attack of the’ and ‘atomic’ or radiactive’ and ‘zombies’ title? But I was definitely no older than nine when I sort of glimpsed it- so I can’t be 100% sure. It’s possible that they were broadcasting a zombie movie marathon that day and one of the other films had that title. So frustrating!

If you guys figure this one out please let me know- I hope it IS Nightmare City. This mystery makes my memory uncomfortably itchy.

  38. Mike says:

Hi – does anyone know the name of the movie with the following scene: a woman is attacked by a zombie (possibly in a kitchen) and the zombie uses a tin can to gouge her neck – I saw this in a movie theatre in the early 80’s and before the scene there was a warning that came up to indicate a graphic scene was about to come up. The movie was possibly Italian made and could have even been pre 80’s??

    Ring any bells? Thanks!

That’s a great resource, Breggen. Your statement claiming your list is “the largest list of zombie movies which also provides links for online viewing” is no doubt correct. However, yours isn’t the most complete list of zombie movies on the internet, I’m afraid. This site has 778 titles listed, not counting the ones under “status uncertain” — and that doesn’t include Frankenstein movies, mummy movies, and docos.

However, your list does have a few titles I don’t recognise so when I have time I’ll have to update. I will be adding your site to my credit list, and a note about the online viewing. Thanks for contacting me.
