G: Where Did This Come From?

I don’t know what this is, or who directed it — but in the fashion of the time it seems to have the code-like title [G], which — when applied to a giant monster movie — automatically evokes the spectre of the Big G himself, Gojira (Godzilla).

This dude doesn’t look much like the Big G though…

From the two trailers and two scene segments below — unearthed by a chap on the kaiju forums tagged “Cookson”, via Kaiju Search-Robot Avery — the independent (perhaps even fan-based) film uses a combination of traditional kaiju suitmation and CGI to create a giant monster flick that is ground-level, violent and bloody, potentially having lots of emotional intensity, while retaining all those elements of absurdity that make the genre so appealing.

It even has a Robo-like giant robot to face up to the monster in true mecha style.

Anyway, take a look at these trailers and clips and hopefully we’ll find out some concrete information on the film soon.

    This looks rather sweet.

  2. Mysterious Pants says:

I’m intrigued! I suspect that it’s some sort of fan production, but those involved have really put a lot of effort into it.

  3. Avery says:

I just heard from Keith over at ‘Sci-Fi Japan’ that the name of the film is actually just; “G.” They will be scooping the film with an exclusive interview very soon, so keep your eyes open. I think that it does look incredibly well done for an indie/fan film. I just hope that it will be picked up outside of Japan for distribution. I’d really love to see it.

  4. Backbrain says:

    Jacob,

“Sweet” is an interesting way to describe a monster film in which, whatever else may happen, a soldier gets bloodily shot to pieces by a panicked comrade and another gets splattered by a flying tank.

    🙂

  5. Backbrain says:

Mr Pants, I’ll be intrigued to find out if it is a fan production. It looks too expensive and large-scale to be by fans, so I’ll be very impressed if it is. I’m guessing some independent production. Mind you, there’s a fine line between the two.

  6. Jacob says:

I meant “sweet” more or less in the old “it’s a new kaiju movie”. Besides, I doubt any giant monster vs. army fight is suppose to be pretty.

  7. Backbrain says:

Sorry, Jacob. I knew what you meant. I was just being a smartarse.

  8. Todd says:

    “Kaneko-esque”!

    Very well done, indeed.
    Toho should hire this crew
    immediately!

  9. Backbrain says:

As long as they give them something good to work on and don’t just hide them in a cupboard somewhere!

  10. Chuck McKenzie says:

Wow! I’m not a major kaiju fan, Rob, as you’d know, but this actually looks pretty damn good – there’s a gritty atmosphere of realism to it that I’ve not seen in many other giant monster flicks. Love the robot, too!

  12. Todd says:

OK, how about letting them work on THIS movie (if it isn’t completed yet) and 2 sequels?

    Hear that, Toho?!;0)

  13. Avery says:

Well, in a way, I guess it is sort of a fan film and indie at the same time. Keith Akin of ‘Sci-Fi Japan said: “G is an indie movie that was made by by a special effects filmmaker who has worked on studio pictures. This was his own project and he raised the money to make it himself. The acting is by non-professionals and is pretty poor. The fx are hit and miss, but I admire the variety of different techniques used and some of the shots are imaginative and excellent.

G also has several intentionally funny moments. The robot design is supposed to be humorous.” Hmmmn?? Makes me wonder if this is that small new kaiju film that Norman England mentioned that Kiyotaka Taguchi was working on in an interview with ‘Kensforce’ some time back????

  14. Avery says:

For anyone who doesn’t know; Kiyotaka Taguchi did spfx on several of the more recent Godzilla films.

  15. Firerodan of BBQ says:

I think we get it Avery, this movie is gonna be kickass!!

  16. Backbrain says:

Thanks for that info, Avery. Pity about the acting. That is often the main problem with small, fan-based productions. When they have “professionals” involved, such productions generally seem to be driven by directors and technical people rather than actors. Do we know who the director is? Kiyotaka Taguchi himself perhaps?

  18. Keith says:

Like Avery mentioned, “G” was made by Kiyotaka Taguchi, an FX artist who has worked on the recent Godzilla movies from GMK to FINAL WARS plus BATTLE ROYALE II, SINKING OF JAPAN, and THE GRUDGE 2. Taguchi also made the monster and robot suits for G with Kakusei Fujiwara, another Godzilla series veteran whose credits include ZATOICHI and CASSHERN.

Kiyotaka Taguchi has provided SciFi Japan with an exclusive look at G that includes story details, cast and crew information, behind the scenes photos, promotional art, and dozens of screen shots from the film. Everything (including some minor spoilers) is now online at:

Hi, Keith. I’ve been offline for a while and away, and your comment here slipped by me. Thanks for all the info — the SciFi Japan article is excellent as always.
