Dreams of Godzilla

Godzilla may have gone into retirement, but that doesn’t stop people from dreaming. It seems that the Big G returns to Japanese cinema screens in Always-zoku san-chôme no yûhi [aka Always – Sunset on Third Street 2] (2007; dir. Takashi Yamazaki) — sequel to the same director’s multi-award-winning mega-hit drama Always san-chôme no yûhi (2005).

In a two-minute dream sequence, the Big G makes a nostalgic visit to the film’s 1959 Tokyo neighbourhood as an all-CGI giant — and the effect looks considerably more Godzilla-like than the maligned 1998 US effort.

The effects remind me of Shusuke Kaneko’s”Godzilla,Mothra,And King Ghidorah:Giant Monsters All-Out-Attack”[2001].They look fantastic!! Imagine a feature length film using this Big-G??I keep hearing nothing but great things about both entries in this series.

I wonder… do you suppose that the next time Japan produces out a new Godzilla film (which is really only a matter of time), that they’ll go the CGI route instead of an actor in a suit? Seeing this makes me wonder.

I’m dying to see this new footage. I wish that somebody would “YouTube” it.

I’ve been rather negative about Godzilla going to CGI, but, as you say, the look of this makes me think that it might be a good idea. With the Godzilla series officially in hiatus (because it has been losing box-office and suitmation is an expensive technique perceived even by Japanese audiences as “old-fashioned”), it may be that this sort of change is necessary. Still, I think they could make a combination of suitmation and CGI work.
