Great cover, Nick! Love your atmosphere and light reflection
    in this illustration.

  2. Hey Todd,

Thanks for the comments. I’ve been itchin’ to paint something fun like this for ages. All those reflected light effects come from years of experience painting backgrounds for Hanna Barbera.

I’m enjoying the Godzilla 94 comic, which must be taking you ages judging by the detail level. Haven’t seen Dave Russell for ages…I’m not even sure he’s still here in Oz.

You painted backgrounds for Hanna Barbera, eh? Coolness abounds!
Ever since I was about 10 years old, I looked MUCH more at those watercolor and gouache painted backgrounds than at the actual cartoon characters themselves, and that it was a strong desire of mine to do those myself. Is there a list online somewhere of what you did? Love to hear more on that.

re: my GODZILLA ’94 gn; I’ve been away from it for quite a while and am just now getting things started back up again. It doesn’t take me all that long to do most of it. In my case, that results from 28 years of architectural renderings
(I do mostly cgi renderings now, but I also painted many of them with gouache & water colors).

Yes, David Russell is still right there in Oz. Besides being an superbly talented artist, David is one of the nicest and most encouraging individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Here is his site:

I don’ty know about Nick’s backgrounds for HB, Todd, but there’s a gallery of a lot of his work here:

  5. I’ve painted backgrounds for Hanna Barbera, Disney, a lot of small Australian commercial studios……but that’s all ancient history.

For HB I worked on tons of shows: Scooby Doo, Teen Wolf, Berenstein (sp?) Bears…Top Cat and Flintstones specials. I did all sorts of things, from special effects animation to sculpting maquettes for 3D rotoscoping.

Animation and cover art are no longer viable income earners, so I’ve shifted more towards fine art — portraits, landscapes — that sort of thing. I used to do a lot of film work, matte paintings, storyboards, concept art, model making, but again…I’m not seeing any of this work anymore.

I’m currently working towards bringing a feature film about the famous aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira to life.

Dave was friendly with writer Terry Dowling when he first moved over, but I haven’t seen him for ages. I’ve just heard Ron Cobb is here in Sydney, and want to catch up with him too.

Oh…my website is long overdue for an update!

  6. Ooo…just remembered…I’m watching the original Jonny Quest, and the backgrounds for that are gorgeous!
