The Milpitas Monster
from The Milpitas Monster
(US-1975; dir. Robert L. Burrill)
“Fifty tons of living trash on a rampage!”
Here’s one insane little indie monster flick that has stood the test of time! The Milpitas Monster is a giant creature formed from pollution that rises up to go on a rampage and generally bring destruction to the town of Milpitas. The beastie is utterly weird, yet somehow curiously intriguing. As a pile of living trash, it isn’t what you might have expected. Virtually a “home movie” made by the town folk of Milpitas in California, The Milpitas Monster is a satiric comedy throwback to the creature features of the 1950s. Director Burrill was a teacher of photography at the local high school and somehow he managed to convince local residents, businesses and school students to offer up their time, resources and money to make the film, with a giant monster created via both man-in-a-suit technology and stop-motion techniques.

Well, there I thought I’d at least heard of every giant monster around…
It looks a bit like Cthulhu, methinks.
Yeah,it’s VERY low budget and VERY indie, but still was made with a lot of heart and is loads of fun.The monster looks nothing like the pile of ‘living trash’ described, but is rather cool looking and creative. This one, without a doubt, earns it’s spot on the list. Thanks to Mr. Burrill and the good townsfolk of Milpitas for making such a fun and loving tribute to the giant monster genre films of the 50’s.
I keep thinking I’ve heard of every giant monster too, but I’m continually finding something else, something new. Perhaps they simply breed like rabbits — backward through time.
Heh. I’ve watched enough weird movies to call that a logical thought.
Me too. Strange that ! 🙂
I think this creature could be a lost relative of Hedorah. I mean both are made by pollution and well you get the idea.
The plot that came to my mind when I saw the words “do you know where your trash is?” was that a mad scientist at a dump creates a monster out of garbage. Even that would make more sense than the plot offered here
