Beyond the Loch Ness Terror

From Kaiju Search-Robot Avery, an interesting-looking lake monster flick:

Beyond Loch Ness [aka Loch Ness Terror] (Canada-2007; dir. Paul Ziller)

The original title Beyond Loch Ness was obviously changed so no one would confuse the film with 2001’s Beneath Loch Ness, despite possible confusion with Larry Buchanan’s “classic” The Loch Ness Horror (1981) — which Marketing no doubt figured few would either remember or admit to having seen. From the IMDb synopsis, however, the original title seems to actually make sense:

James Murphy (Brian Krause) is a rugged cryptozoologist, who thirty years earlier, during a trip to Loch Ness, Scotland, had a fatal encounter with the fabled “Nessie” creature that killed his father, and left James with deep facial scar. Twenty years later, James is hunting for Nessie, when his search leads him to the sleepy town of Pike Island, Ashburn, on Lake Superior. Hiring Josh Riley (Niall Matter) as his guide, James and Josh bond over their mutual scientific interests and deceased fathers, while James tries to convince Josh’s mother, Sheriff Karen Riley (Carrie Genzel), that the 60-foot plesiosaur is killing and breeding.

Speaking of Buchanan’s The Loch Ness Horror:

Blind Dead

Being a zombie isn’t always easy. For some it presents challenges:

Blind Dead

Clive Hills’ return from the dead as a brain-eating zombie was slightly hampered last night after he discovered that several vital organs, including his corneas, were missing. ‘I’m kicking myself to be honest.’ said Mr Hill, ‘Being one of the walking un-dead is a challenge I’m willing to step up to. But being un-dead and blind takes me right out of the game. The bottom line is, thanks to the organ donor register, I just can’t keep up with other zombies.’

Thanks to Sean Williams for the information.

When Bread gets Dead…

First there was The Gingerdead Man (US-2005; dir. Charles Band), where the soul of a killer animates (with the help of SFX artist John Carl Buechler) a gingerbread man, creating a murderous cookie monster. Now director Silvia St. Croix brings you Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust (US-2008):

Just when you thought it was safe to open the pastry box

New: The Incredible Hulk

Now this seems to be taking the Hulk even further into kaiju territory than Ang Lee did, even if the styling has been made more conventional.

Little Lost Sea Serpent

Little lost sea serpent

As far as I can tell, Little Lost Sea Serpent (US-1995; dir. Donald G. Jackson) appears to be about a boy who finds a baby sea serpent and takes it home. What I want to know is, does a full-sized sea serpent turn up at any point? Or does the Little Lost Sea Serpent grow up in the course of the film?

Enquiring minds want to know? Has anyone out there seen it?

“In the Service of the Flesh” Reviewed

I just stumbled upon this review of my zombie story “In the Service of the Flesh” by the insightful Chuck McKenzie on the Horrorscope website. It’s always good to get a rave review. The last sentence is particularly pleasing.

‘In the Service of the Flesh’ is Rob Hood’s latest contribution to the zombie genre, and it’s a beaut. I can’t say too much about it without giving away the plot, so I’ll limit myself to mentioning only that it’s laugh-out-loud funny, and boasts levels of gore that would make George Romero blanch. This may well be the very best zombie tale I’ve ever read.

from a review of Australian Dark Fantasy and Horror 2007 Edition on the Horrorscope website, 4 March 2008.

Chuck has been writing his own online “real-time” tale of a zombie apocalypse on his “One Day At A Time” blog. Here’s where it began and here’s the latest installment. It’s definitely worth your while to check it out: a full-on zombie novel… and it’s free.

And here is the Brimstone Press website, so you can order of copy of the book that includes “…the best zombie tale…ever…”

Giant Robot in Space!

This one’s not fiction! The report comes from Wired News (via Iain Triffitt):

Astronauts bound for orbit this week will dabble in science fiction, assembling a “monstrous” two-armed space station robot that will rise like Frankenstein from its transport bed.

Putting together Dextre, the robot, will be one of the main jobs for the seven Endeavour astronauts, who are scheduled to blast off in the wee hours of Tuesday, less than three weeks after the last shuttle flight.

Nick Frost and the Living Dead

This isn’t new, but I was doing some Zombie Film updating when I stumbled upon it and thought I should put it here for the sake of nerdish completeness. So here it is, Nick Frost (of Shaun of the Dead fame) and his doco on how to survive zombies:

Danger! 50,000 Zombies! (UK-2004; short; dir. Jon Riley)

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

And just for a laugh, the “zombie” sequence from Simon Pegg’s Spaced.
