New: The Planet

The Planet (UK-2006; dir. Mark Stirton)

The Planet poster

The Planet is an independent sci-fi/horror film that involves space battles, a strange planet inhabited by something dangerous and a small band of soldiers struggling to survive on it. Despite the stated 2006 release date, it has undergone further development since first being aired and will finally be available on DVD on 10 June 2008.

Attack!

A mercenary spaceship ferrying a convict is attacked by a horde of unidentified fighter craft. Forced to abandon their crippled ship the survivors land on “The Planet”. Soon they discover that they are not alone, as they battle to survive they begin to fall prey to a malevolent force. A force which turns the souls of their fallen comrades against them. Forming a rescue plan the survivors race to carry it out while they still can.

Unknown to the team, the prisoner is also on the planet and his presence there could change the universe as they know it, forever…..

Finding the source

I hope to be able to review the film sometime in the near future, but in the meantime, here’s a view of its giant monster (you knew it had to have one, didn’t you?), obtained exclusively from the director, Mark Stirton, by Kaiju Search-Robot Avery. It is a creature formed from the restless souls of the dead (click on the image to see it full size):

Coming soon! Ret Romanne

Ret Romanne teaser poster

This is by way of an introduction to what comic artist and writer Alan Brooks considers to be his magnum opus, Ret Romanne.

Ret Romanne is a Time Dignitary who lives and works on the Off World “Cloud City” of Earth – UNtopia. The comic series, both written and illustrated by Brooks, will be released in August 2008 from Bluewater Productions. It is a time-twisty tale of a “dead” man desperate to work out the mystery of his own very strange fate while engaged in an ongoing struggle to maintain something resembling a life.

Says Brooks, “Ret Romanne has it all — surveillance, time travel and Nazis. Just like real life! It’s a Time Travel adventure that makes all other Time Travel adventures look out of date!”

Stay tuned for exclusive updates as the release approaches!

Listen, when the girls came to us, we did nothing to help them, so why would they help us? [from Godzilla vs Mothra (1964)]

A giant moth seems simple enough, right? A giant moth that is a deity to the inhabitants of an irradiated island (most commonly known as “Infant Island”)? A moth that is mankind’s only hope against Godzilla? A moth that is perpetually reborn, but is willing to fight for “good relations” even in its larval state? And what about a magical giant moth that can take on various forms, including “Fairy Mothra”: a tiny form that can spread into many; “Mecha-Mothra”: an armored version of the titular beast; and “Aqua-Mothra”: an aquatic take on the creature? This mystical creature never ceases to amaze with its endless array of magical tricks — and remains extremely popular in its home country. Best of all it comes equipped with two tiny twin magical singing fairies…

Grand Guardian Tokyo

Here is the ultimate in modern apartment living — a building guaranteed to protect you from earthquakes, ‘copter attack, and the general mayhem of society. It’ll even make sure you get to work on time. Too bad about everyone else, of course. And one wonders what life would be like once Godzilla turned up?

Ghidrah

Naoko Shindo: Oh it looks like they’re having a conversation. Oh Shindo, what do you think they’re saying to each other?
Detective Shindo: Huh, how would I know? You expect me to understand monster talk?

This space monster, the arch-nemesis of Godzilla the king of all monsters, is definitely one of the most insane creations to date to grace our list — a giant golden-scaled, triple-headed dragon kaiju from space that can spew lightning bolts from its mouths with destructive consequences. In its original screen appearances it even had golden hair! Over the years there have been many various different takes on the creature, including a cyborg version developed by the Futurians, but no matter what form he takes Ghidrah or King Ghidorah easily steals the show with every appearance and is popularly considered the most genuinely fearsome of the lot.

Update: Flying Saucers vs the Earth

Artist Alan Brooks has sent this trailer that he’s put together for the Ray Harryhausen Presents/Bluewater Productions comicbook he’s been working on — Flying Saucers vs the Earth. The first issue is now available.

Famed Sci-Fi novel cover artist Alan Brooks brings Ray Harryhausen’s vision of the 1950s cult classic “Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers” to comic book format! Like every planetary invasion, there are two sides of the story. Told from the perspective of the aliens, see why the Sons of Aberann decide to wage war against Earth, and what type of culture spawned their warmongering ways! See them race on their Screamers in the wastelands of their planet while dodging the beastly Dustspeeds! Witness psychedelic alien fortune telling! And see what fate befalls those who cross the Warlord of Aberann!
